Günter Brus (Ardning, AT, 1938)
Günter Brus is a painter, performance artist, graphic artist, experimental filmmaker and writer. Together with Otto Mühl, Hermann Nitsch, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler, he was the founder of Viennese Actionism. With the movement he used self-harm, pain and the cathartic shock of the public as a protest against the cultural repression that Austrian society exercised on the drive of the individual. Since the 1970s he has dedicated himself to drawing, tackling the themes of death and sexuality in a stylistic key that recalls the tradition of A. Kubin, O. Kokoschka and E. Schiele.
