Jean-Charles Blais (Nantes, FR, 1956)
Jean-Charles Blais began his training as a painter in Rennes. In 1981, he took part in the exhibition “Finir en beauté” linked to the movement “Figuration libre”. On the basis of torn-off advertising posters which are then stuck on top of each other in multiple layers, he developed a pictorial language, less interested in the surface of the two-dimensionally formulated message and more concerned with the space articulated “behind” the surface. The multilayered nature of the material and the view to the incidental edges and creases create associative structures. Its expressive figure is characterized by the presence of characters who are sketched, mysterious or simple silhouettes.
