Mangelos (born Dimitrije Bašičević; Šid, Serbia 1921 – Zagreb, Croatia 1987). Mangelos, the son of the Serbian artist Ilja Bašičević, was a very important figure in Croatia, helping the development of abstract art in eastern Europe. He studied in Vienna and Zagreb and worked as an artist, curator and art critic. Mangelos, one of the founding members of the avant-garde Gorgona Group, worked mainly with language trying to negate the irrationality of the act of painting trough the use of text and, by ripping off letters in his painted text-works, negating the rationality of writing, transforming the text in pure shape form.
