Tomas Schmit (Wipperfürth, DE, 1943 – Berlin, DE, 2006)
Tomas Schmit was a conceptual artist and author. He is one of the pioneers of the Fluxus movement in the early 1960s. In 1961, he met Nam June Paik, through whom he met George Maciunas and the first Fluxus activities. In 1962, he participated in the performance Neo-Dada in music hosted by the Düsseldorfer Kammerspiele, as well as the Parallele Aufführungen neuester Musik in Amsterdam and developed his first “pieces”. In the following years, he participated in most of the European Fluxus festivals and organized in 1964 the Festival of New Art at the Technical University in Aachen, with artists such as Joseph Beuys, Arthur Køpcke, Wolf Vostell and Nam June Paik.
